GROWING FILBERTS SUCCESSFULLY

Filberts can be grown successfully over a wide area of eastern North America as long as some important details are followed. They do not compete well with sod. They also need extra moisture to keep from being stressed. In addition to irrigation, a thick mulch will help conserve moisture and keep the root zone cool. Finally, filberts need soil that is slightly acid. A soil pH of 5.5 to 5.7 is about right. If soil pH is too high, the filbert cannot pick up certain elements such as manganese and phosphorous. Filberts are sensitive to herbicides.

GRAFTED FILBERTS

GRAND TRAVERSE - Formally 81C was introduced by Cecil Farris of Lansing, Michigan. It was a controlled cross of Faroka and Royal. The nut is dull brown and almost round in shape, The thin shell and plump, light colored kernel combine to produce a kernel weight/total weight ratio of 51%. Kernel flavor is excellent. The tree has grown in lower Michigan for ten years and is vigorous and winter hardy. Ripening date is a little later than average. The kernel quality is equal to, or better than anything available.

89-LISA - Good producer of nuts that can ripen by mid-September. Nuts can be easily shaken from the open husks. Kernel are light colored and clean and are easily cracked form the paper-thin shells. The upper medium sized nuts are light with a faint stripe. The only apparent weakness is that the nuts are moderately elongated in shape. This should be no problem for in-shell sales.

G-22 - Nuts of this variety are medium-sized and almost round. Shell is thin, kernel are very plump, light colored, and free of adhering tissue. Nuts are mature and can be easily shaken down by mid-September. It appears to be a good producer, but no firm data exists.

88-BS - Nuts of 88-BS are close to perfect. The shape of the medium-sized nuts is almost round, shell is uniformly thin. Color is medium brown with a faint stripe. The kernel is perfectly clean, light colored, but one notch behind 88-Q in plumpness. Nuts ripen the third week of September and fall readily from the short, open husks.

G-14 - A good producer of large, slightly elongated nuts. Shells are thin and kernels are clean and well developed. Husks are flared and open and cover about 2/3 of the nuts. Ripening is in late September. G-14 is resistant to bud mite and has never been infected by hazel blight after 8 years of exposure. Tests have shown that Grand Traverse in an effective pollinator for G-14.

G-17 - Good producer of high quality, medium-sized nuts. Kernels are well developed and light colored. Nut shape is almost round. Nuts ripen in mid-September and fall free of the husk. Trees are resistant to bud mite and relatively resistant to hazel blight. One small blight lesion has been found on it after 8 years of exposure. 89 BI can be pollinated by Grand Traverse.

GROWING WALNUTS SUCCESSFULLY

Walnuts require a deep well-drained soil and favor neutral to alkaline pH. While somewhat slow growing at first, they will begin bearing in 3-6 years. Walnuts are an excellent multiple use nut tree, yielding high quality nuts, valuable wood (Carpathian Walnut is known as Circassian Walnut in the trade), good shade (especially heartnuts), and minimum pest problems or pruning requirements. Of special interest are grafted walnut trees of known parentage.

GRAFTED WALNUTS

SHIAWASSEE WALNUT - The Shiawassee Walnut is a large and heavy nut that is bore two years from seed. Lateral bearing, clod hardness to 34F. Large clusters of well sealed shells, and light color kernel at 58% kernel. Disease resistance, bears the second week of September.

SOMERS PERSIAN WALNUT - The Somers Persian Walnut was grown and selected by the late Lee Somers of Perrington, Michigan. The seed the original tree grew from was collected in the Carpathian Mountains of Poland by P.C. Crath in the late 1930's. The nut is large, light colored, and has a very good shape. The tree has withstood 35F without damage. The nuts ripen in late August in Michigan. Somers is one of the best of the Carpathian Walnuts. It is also a late pollen shedder and can help Hansen pollinate its late pistillate blooms. Grafted trees bear in four to five years.

HANSEN PERSIAN WALNUT - Probably the most widely grown of the cold tolerant english Walnut varieties. The original tree grew at Clay Center, Ohio, but it was thought to have originated in Germany. It has been successfully grown from Ontario to Georgia and Oklahoma. The Hansen nut is almost round, medium in size and with a paper thin shell. The kernel is light colored and mild in flavor. The kernel's total weight ratio can be as high as 65%. Ripening is in mid-September at Lansing, Michigan. Grafted Hansen trees sometimes produce pistillate blooms the first year and pollen blooms at about three to four years. It is a dependable, annual bearer. Hansen should be considered as a self-pollinating variety but it would set better crops if it had a late pollen.

PERRY WALNUT - Heavy bearer of large clusters, thin shell, and light kernel at 56% kernel. Cold hardness to 34F with no damage or winter died back. Lateral bearing, bears the third week of September, and will bear three years after planting. Good disease resistance.

S-1 WALNUT - This is a high producer of medium - large nuts with light, sweet kernels. They mature the 4th week of September with a clean fall from husks. The shells are thin with a good seal. My 3 year trees produced 16 pounds of nuts per tree. This walnut is a fast growing tree with very good tree form.

LOOKING GLASS WALNUT - This walnut is a large nut at 20 per pound, with light sweet kernels. It is cold hardy to -34F. The nuts are round in shape with very thin shell thickness. This variety is a high producer that matures the 3rd week of September.

CHINA-B - This is our largest nut in our nursery. They go 14 nuts per pound, with a thin shell thickness and large kernels. It matures on the 3rd week of September. This tree is very cold hearty to -34F. The nut free falls from husks with a rounded shape and also has a good shell seal. This variety has an upright tree form.
